If your looking for a surfing
destination with sun and surf, prefect for all level of surfer, then no
surprises that Australia is top of the list as a activity
holidays destination. The west coast boasts over 12,000 kilometers of
coastline, with some of the best surf in Australia, reaching 3m most days.
Perth however has smaller waves, better suited to beginners.
Margaret
River :
Margaret River is
internationally known as one of the best big-wave surfing locations on Earth
for consistently spectacular breaks, there are over 40 top spots along Margaret
River's coast, with conditions ranging from powerful reef breaks to fun beach
surf. Blessed with mild weather and abundant sunshine, Margaret River has
evolved from a chilled-out surfie town into a popular base for enjoying the
region's fine flavours and spectacular scenery, where rolling vineyards sit
against a backdrop of ocean and forest.
Yallingup :
The
beach of Yallingup offers surfers, steep, hollow waves more suited to advanced
surfers only. Names like Rabbit Hill and Mousetrap refer to a reliable cluster
of rocks and sand jotted along the shore. Top
surfing stars such as Taj Burrow and Jake Patterson are considered locals here,
when not competing on the ASP World Surfing Tour. Taj grew around these
coastlines and while
some surfers battled the hard slog for years to pro, Taj qualified for the
World Tour rankings on his debut attempt at just 18, becoming the youngest
surfer to ever do so at the time.
Strickland Bay, Rottnest Island :
By using a bike is the only
way to get around Rottnest Island and tons of surfers head directly to
Strickland Bay, the most consistent wave. Surfers can get rides up to 4m over a
shallow reef ledge that has a lock-in end tube section. There are decent rights
on smaller swells. The main reason it is often busy, is Strickland is not as
hectic as other breaks and novice surfers can join the line-up through the
defined channels and pick off a few. This is no place for novice surfers as the
sharp reef can cut skin easily.
These top surf locations as one of your activity holidays should get you surfing no
matter what the swell forecast.
